Why the gap exists
Not the camera. Cinema bodies and glass cost the same to hire in both cities, and the sensor is not what makes a reel work.
It is floor space in zone one. That is the entire story.
So let me be plain about it: you are not buying a cheaper product up here. You are buying the same product from someone with a smaller rent bill.
What is genuinely identical
- Cinema camera and glass, shot for a filmic depth of field
- Lighting rebuilt between pieces, not one setup for the whole session
- A director in the room giving adjustments and running it again
- Lavalier and boom sound, recorded properly
- A broadcast colour grade so three speeches read as one film
Those five things decide whether a reel holds a casting director's attention. Nothing on that list is city-specific.
The travel, honestly

If you need something in front of a casting director inside 48 hours, film in London.
If your local studio is genuinely good and genuinely affordable, use them. We would rather tell you that than take a booking that leaves you out of pocket on travel for no real gain.
What the saving buys instead
The difference between £295 and £450 is roughly the cost of a headshot round, or a year of a casting platform subscription, or three months of travel to auditions.
If your headshot is also stale, the headshots and showreel package puts both on one trip — which usually costs less than doing them separately and definitely looks more coherent.

No, and nobody watching can tell. Casting directors judge lighting, sound, performance and grade. A postcode does not appear in the frame, and no casting brief has ever asked where a reel was shot.
Is it really cheaper once I have paid for the train?
For most people, comfortably. The session difference is typically £150 to £400 against an advance return that is a fraction of that. You are usually ahead before counting the day rate you did not lose.
What is actually identical between the two?
